"When Mothers Die," Giving Beast

Liya Kebede participated in Giving Beast, the Daily Beast's section on philanthropy and humanitarian work.

"Mothers are the world’s best stimulus package because they invest in their families and their communities," said Kebede. "When a mother dies, her children are up to 10 times more likely to die within two years. They are less likely to be immunized, more likely to be malnourished, more likely to contract HIV, and more likely to be exploited. When a mother lives, her children are fed, attend school, and know that someone exists who will do absolutely anything to make their lives better. We can't break the cycle of poverty and create real development if we don't start saving mothers' lives."
