Leaders Demand Action on MDG 5

On September 25th at the United Nations’ Headquarters, Liya Kebede participated in a World Health Organization Women Leaders Forum on Millennium Development Goal number Five. This goal aims to significantly improve maternal health by reducing the mortality rate and increasing the availability of reproductive and sexual health.

The MDGs are agreed upon international goals that strive to alleviate the world’s greatest development challenges by implementing the following changes: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child and maternal mortality, combat HIV/AIDS and malaria, ensure environmental protection, and develop a global partnership for development. The projects deadline is 2015; this meeting marked its midway point.

The purpose of the Women Leaders Forum was to review MDG 5’s success, identify areas that require greater effort, and ensure progression continues until 2015. First ladies in attendance, including Chantal Biya of Cameroon and Turai Yar’Adua of Nigeria, elaborated on the efforts to reduce maternal mortality in their countries. Liya vowed to continue raising the visibility of maternal health concerns in developing countries.
