Women Leaders Dinner
On September 24th, Liya Kebede attended the Women Leaders Dinner co-hosted by Queen Rania of Jordan, Wendi Murdoch, and Sarah Brown-the UK Prime Minister’s wife-at Tao Restaurant in New York City. The event was held in order to raise awareness for the White Ribbon Alliance (WRA), a NGO campaigning to prevent mothers’ mortality during childbirth. The White Ribbon Alliance is working with the global actor in trying to achieve its fifth Millennium Development Goal of reducing maternal mortality in developing countries by 75% by 2015, saving over 10 million mothers and children.
The audience was full of powerful, influential women and leaders. Attendees included Aerin Lauder, Sarah Ferguson, Vera Wang, Christy Turlington, Gursharan Kauer, Helena Christensen, Marta Stewart, Georgina Chapman, Mary Robinson.
Sarah Brown’s moving speech encouraged audience members to make pledges to support WRA, raising over millions of dollars as well as offering publications, television shows, and events to publicize issues surround maternal health. As the evening came to a close, Sarah revealed, “I am impressed by the number of very proactive pledges made tonight by the women
attending, it has been a huge success.”
